About the Acupuncturist / Massage Therapist

Louise Sexton MSOM, LAc, LMT

Master of Science in Oriental Medicine

Licensed Acupuncturist, CO

Licensed Massage Therapist, CO

Prior to her acupuncture and massage therapy careers, Louise was a practicing Medical Illustrator in New York City.  She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Scientific Illustration from the University of Georgia and her Master of Science in Medical Illustration degree from the Medical College of Georgia (now known as the Georgia Health Sciences University).  She continues to apply her anatomical knowledge and artistic talents to both her acupuncture and massage practices and other creative ventures.

After fifteen years in practice as a massage therapist in Colorado and North Carolina, Louise went back to graduate school for acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.  Acupuncture and herbal medicine allow her to address new and different, as well as pre-existing, concerns of her current and new clients with a fresh perspective.  Now she offers acupuncture, herbal medicine or combination treatments of acupuncture and massage where she can employ the most beneficial aspects of each to facilitate body awareness and healing.

Louise earned her Master of Science in Oriental Medicine (MSOM) degree from Southwest Acupuncture College (SWAC) in Boulder, CO in August 2019. This four year program consists of 3,092.5 hours of education including 1,262.5 hours of clinical practice. She was board certified as a Diplomate of Acupuncture in December 2019 and a Diplomate in Chinese Herbal Medicine in January 2020 by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). She is also certified in Clean Needle Technique (CNT). After graduation, Louise expanded her existing massage therapy practice of 17 years to include acupuncture and herbal medicine. Louise's training includes adjunctive therapies such as moxibustion, tui na, acupressure, cupping, auriculotherapy, trigger point therapy and dietary and lifestyle changes. Louise is a member of the Acupuncture Association of Colorado (AAC). She is a Licensed Acupuncturist (LAc) in Colorado, where she currently resides.

Louise graduated from the Boulder College of Massage Therapy (BCMT) in 2002 with over 1000 hours of supervised training and clinical experience. Her studies included Zen shiatsu, Swedish therapeutic, neuromuscular therapy and integrative massage therapy all of which she blends in her current practice. Other areas of study and practice include medical massage, lymph drainage, reflexology, hot stones, ashiatsu, sports/orthopedic and prenatal/postpartum massage techniques. She was awarded the Honora Wolfe Community Service Award for her abundant hours of community service. She was Board Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (BCTMB) and is a member of the Association of Massage & Bodywork Professionals (ABMP).  She is a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) in Colorado.

She returned to BCMT in 2006 as a teaching assistant in the school’s Anatomiken™ (anatomy studies in clay) and structural Kinesiology classes.  She was an instructor of Swedish therapeutic massage and the elective course Introduction to Massage Therapy from 2007 through 2011.  In addition to her teaching duties, she served as a mentor to students and a supervisor in the student clinic and at various internship sites working with collegiate athletes and musicians.  During the fall of 2009, Louise had the amazing experience of traveling to Dharamsala, India through one of the school’s global community outreach programs, Massage for Peace.  Along with a handful of other instructors from BCMT, she taught massage therapy skills to Tibetan refugees with the assistance of the Lha Charitable Trust.

From her time working in medical practices with chiropractors, osteopaths, acupuncturists, and physical therapists she is capable of working with a variety of medical conditions and injury rehabilitation for which massage and acupuncture are considered helpful.  Since she also has equal appreciation for and experience working in day spas, she enjoys offering an environment that is soothing to the mind, body and spirit - including aromatherapy and a heated table.  While her work is often described as deep and specific, it is also said to be relaxing and truly therapeutic.

Since Louise was initially drawn to the field of massage therapy through receiving bodywork as a competitive athlete, she enjoys working with active and competitive individuals to enhance training, reduce injury or speed recovery. During Louise’s high school and collegiate years, she became a more serious athlete, training and shooting pistols competitively through the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. This experience introduced her to her future home, Colorado, and helped her become familiar with how athletic injuries affect the body and the mind.  Her experience working for a medical animation studio before dedicating herself to the healing arts of acupuncture and massage, allows her to relate to those who spend long hours on the computer and the effects of stress and postural habits on the body that accompany this type of work.

Outside of the office, Louise enjoys being outdoors with friends and family. Swimming, paddle boarding, cycling, yoga, archery, hiking and art are the activities that energize and motivate her the most.
